Ten years ago, I hobbled together my take on FASERIP by taking the public domain 4CS game and changing it to use 1d20 and doing a makeover on the tables and rules. It now has 850+ downloads.

Even the art in the pdf is public domain from comic books that let their copyright expire.

I remain convinced that "roughly 10 seconds" is a good measure for a round of combat and that "roughly 10 minutes" is a good measure for a turn of exploration; rounding any combat up to at least the next turn seems fine as well. Multiple attacks just clog up the flow; for fighters let excess damage carry over to a nearby foe (with the same AC or worse if you must). Instead of all these "timing issues" focus on who keeps who engaged and deal with that. Just my $0.02 obviously. 🤷

@phf@tabletop.social I think ~ 10 seconds for a combat round is fine for individual initiative, though I feel like far too much leniency is often given to players for their characters to share information and coordinate their actions in such a short timeframe and that bugs me (example is any 5e/PF actual-play podcast).
I kind of like the (Holmes?) idea that the players decide their strategy, referee decides his/hers, and then the sides roll to see whose plan survives contact with the enemy.

@frotz I think what we observe there (I do too) is partially caused by the "modern" initiative ranking. Technically it all happens in the same 6 seconds, but since "later" players know what "earlier" players did ... there's one piece of the "not realistic" annoyance right there. The other piece is "earlier" players talking with "later" players about how to set up combos and the like, again something that probably should not be like that. If you discuss *ahead* of initiative, maybe even with "unrealistic" amounts of words spoken, and *then* roll to see in which order it happens (no further changes allowed) a lot of that disappears. I don't recall Holmes, but the B/X "Expert" set certainly talks about announcing spells before initiative is rolled. And one could do that for everything. That doesn't solve ALL the issues, but maybe it shouldn't be "put each player in an isolated cubby with a VR simulation that's seconds-accurate" either? If only for "social" reasons? 😬

@phf@tabletop.social Really, I think the answer is simple - instead of a 6/10/whatever second total round, just make each player initiative stop that long, so instead of pretending it's all happening in near-simultaneity just let it be linear like everyone treats it in the first place.

I'm not anti-cooperation, I just don't like long discussions and monologues in the middle of a combat round.

@randomwizard@vivaldi.net The impact in this article is represented as hurting "content providers" who monetize their clicks. Quite frankly, I could not care less if those sites have to suddenly become paywalled and thus die a lingering death. If they hadn't latched onto the 'surveillance capitalism' mentality and focused on eking every last fraction of a cent out of traffic maybe I'd be more sympathetic.
Google Search or no, if I go to a site 6 times out of 10 i get a JavaScript 'popup' asking me to disable my adblocker. Funny - I don't use one, but I do use Privacy Badger and the anti-tracking settings in my browser. If sites weren't trying to suckle on the advertising teats of Google for money this would be just a matter of waiting on a substandard product (search) to be replaced by something that works better for people.

I agree that before AI, the surveillance advertising industry was a terrible setup. I spent years extolling the corruption of the internet by Google and advertisers.

The thing that bugs me about the latest pivot to AI in search is it gives Google the content. It is like the AI is some magic "do not go to jail" machine so Google can steal anyone's content and put it on their site.

I do sympathize with people complaining against that.

Their shift from being mere middlemen between users and sites to serving the content as their own is aggressive. Since there's been no government or legal intervention into this kind of AI scraping it seems as if they're pushing hard to make the most of the opportunity, to legitimize it through user adoption before any challenges can work through courts and bureaucracies (if they ever materialize).

Unified XP tables were introduced to D&D in the first place in order to support 3.x-style multiclassing (which 5.x also uses). It would theoretically be possible to instead do levels in a way similar to how point-buy systems do incremental advancement: instead of separate incompatible tracks or a unified XP table, you can "buy" levels of classes with XP, with the price determined by various factors.

Difference is I add multi-classing on top because I took race classes out, and the folks with multi-class get a harder XP table. Not "double" hard like elves here, but harder.

However, I don't allow equal levels: your secondary is only half the level of your primary (rounded up). Stole that from some Castles & Crusade thing I think?

For example, for GAZ10 Orcs of Thar, there are no thieves. It is race as a class, so you play Goblins, Trolls.

I want it to be disconnected from attributes, since lockpicking (for example) isn't just about manual dexterity - it's logic and intuition and perception too. and it's hard! if you don't know how a particular lock works, you haven't got a clue how to pretend you have a key. I often "solve" problems in games that only I want solved, but this is one I've been working on in my head for a while (skills like this, not just the lockpicking).

But, I do want a system where a player can get better at particular things, not just some broad (overly broad) system where you just can do thiefy things and you get better at thiefy things. Which leads to having to write it down, which leads to players getting to hung up on that is all they can do instead of using their brains.

I personally love games with skills - I like to exploit and extrapolate based on what my character is capable of in a style determined by what's on my character sheet. Many of the people I've run games for or played with, however, are just as you described: when presented with a problem they look at their sheet and if no solution is obvious (not just with skills - magic and fighting, too) they will be like "I've got nothing".
I'd love to pin it on a 'videogame mentality' that I despise, but I don't think that's fair or completely accurate (when I am being rational).

One sub-executive presented a new proposal to buy a new 3rd party service to make a process perform better. The proposal was obvious AI slop.

Then another executive put some things into an AI, right there, in the meeting, looking at his laptop and said "Well this is saying you already have too many 3rd party programs in this process and it is causing too many integration issues and that is why the current process is not working well"

And an argument broke out about which AI was right.

*I should note, that I hate typing the letters AI to denote the llms, but that is the term humankind decided to go with.

I did get the package after a panic, but 3 months later it still shows as not delivered in their system. I only noticed due to tracking a different package. After a 15 minute fight with their IVR and being transferred around to 3 departments (sometimes without telling me I was being transferred) with extended holds between, its still not fixed. They just sent me to their survey instead of the final department.

By normalize, I mean I just converted them all to roll low, percent chances.

The chart based games had "bounded accuracy" long before Mike Mearls came up with the term.

Still, to my mind, Marvel, Gamma World, Star Frontiers Zebulon, TSR Conan are all just providing "degrees of success" with different chance to achieve different degrees. If you convert the chances to a chart, it looks like all the old 80s TSR charts. (Image 3)

Made it feel like an over the top wrestling match.

And it adds up more options for the GM to move the needle for or against the players (which I do not like myself).

There were some 3.0 ideas in there, and some other stuff that ended up in their d20 Star Wars game.

The die mechanics. But, I suspect, that is what turns most people off right away. The die mechanic is also, maybe, not presented well in the rules. Here is my take on it.

First. It is a roll low game.
Second. You roll under your ability score + skill to succeed.

So if you str is 9, and your sill in swords is 4, you write down

                                                                                                                                                Swords: 13

You roll a 13 or under on a 1d20 and you hit.

Now for the strange part. As a DM, instead of assigning target numbers, you assign various dice for how difficult something is...

Maybe something is easy, you assign nothing.

But maybe something is just a wee bit hard to do, you assign a difficulty of 1d4.

The player has to roll 1d20 + 1d4 and get under their score to succeed.

Maybe something is even harder, then you can throw a 1d6, or 1d8, or 1d10 and so on to make it harder.

                                                                                                                                                @ToweroftheArchmage @phf

Once there's more than a few in a party, however, the burden they bring outweighs the benefit. They bark and play, causing noise, for example. They aren't allowed in most inns, too. So, the issues usually control the number of them in a party for me.

Recruiting fighting hirelings or attracting a henchmen above 1st level is tough, and you still have to order them around and equip them.

Remember the hundreds of thousands on the streets? And he’s still there. The journalist just said that he probably had the support of 30% of the population.

The setting is more like Lord of the Rings than a typical D&D setting.

Instead there is a first aid skill.

But, the problem is, everyone clamours to get first aid. I mean, why not? It is one of the most powerful skills in a game where you take damage.

I just do not know what to think of it. Are adventurers more like combat soldiers? Do combat soldiers get a six week course in First Aid?

I lean more to "No". This is a medieval setting. The characters that have a first aid skill would be wizards and the old wise woman who lurks in the forest and everyone says is a witch but really just knows more than most peasants.

I agree with the CM/OD&D assertion that adventurers are a bit different than "normal people" in both experience and drive. I would imagine a "veteran" probably has learned a bit of combat and wilderness first aid. Even in medieval settings?

I mean, in GURPS it wasn't uncommon for everyone to have First-Aid and "Hiking", ferchrissakes. But then again, you also had a few dozen other skills, it didn't really preclude characters from having other skills. Which is what happens in most D&D skill systems.

Herbs are a classic choice. Need to be fresh, so no stocking up on 'em, and thus it's a time constraint: I can speed up healing or be safe for the next bleeding out roll, but that'll take me one or more days.

After a fight, you get 1 HP back just for bandaging, no skill roll needed. Then you can treat shock and with a successful First Aid roll you get back points based on the Tech Level, so for fantasy campaigns usually 1d6-3 points, minimum 1. That won't solve all your healing issues, but it's not bad. And IIRC, a single point gets you First Aid at your IQ level, so even Joe Average has a 50% chance of 1-3 extra HP restored, if the high-IQ co-adventurer isn't there. Way worse spots of spending a point.

But again, this is the game where you might take three different skills of stealing stuff, a plethora of sciences in a sci-fi campaign etc., you're pretty much made of skills. D&D tends to be much more about exceptional abilities, niches etc., so I don't think a First Aid proficiency/skill makes sense, nor does everyone taking 1 level/rank in Heal, even if they're veterans. Heck, if the game is that harsh and preventing fellow adventurers from bleeding out all the time like it's X-Com, I'd niche-protect this even more. At least join the resistance to learn it then ;)

At this point healing just becomes another HP pool, and I don't like that.

Healing one character for 1D6 hits over a full turn (10 minutes) does not feel like something that one does to "top up" hit points.

Takes the homework aspect out of the game (= good for spontaneous games e.g. at open tables) and introduces a layer of necessary PC-NPC interaction which increases social embeddedness of MUs - this does something interesting with the setting! Trade-off is an decrease of tactical flexibility on the player‘s side. Was this the point of complaint?
