@lkh You are very much not alone in the world, and that sounds horrifying. :( Am a doctor's daughter and glad my parents retired before the latest wave of this, since I can't imagine coping with the work-life balance impact even indirectly.
I can't keep all my D&D versions straight anymore.
So B/X uses STR for to-hit and damage bonus with melee weapons and DEX for to-hit bonus with missile weapons.
Right?
Which version is adding the DEX bonus to damage for missile weapons? Was there a version that added DEX to damage for bows and slings but STR to damage for daggers and axes to distinguish thrown and projectile weapons?
Anyone?
Seems to me that using STR and DEX in a "cross-over" way like that is actually kinda cute. Why should it not be done like that?
Let's ignore "rate of fire" BS because I am not into AD&D and multiple attacks per round. Because with RoF ... adding bonuses to damage for missiles would be overpowered compared to melee.

@phf Nothing I know of adds DEX to missile damage, tho Swords & Wizardry gives the option of STR adding to bow damage (stronger bow draw, perhaps), for Fighters.
I don't add anything to missile damage, & keep it low, because I want melee to be best, then missiles, then spells go off last, to be more Conan-like.
@phf Not to sidetrack the discussion, but RoF was a *capacity*, not a *property*. (As I remember it, that is.) It was a limit to the number of arrows you could loose in a round through multiple attacks, not an indication of how many you could loose per attack. So no, adding bonuses to mechanical ranged damage in those older editions (bows, crossbows, slings) wouldn't overpower melee, because other fighters at that same approximate level would be making the same number (or more) of melee attacks per round.

Every now and then someone tells me, "We have a decentralized naming system, it's called DNS!" and I say, no we don't, DNS is extremely centralized? And if that wasn't clear to you before, hopefully it's clear to you today.
Glimmermark Session 59: a game of Chainmail for once, the PCs and their troops against one of the local robber knight and his bandits (played by @lkh).
Unfortunately for the bandits the PCs had the better archers, and dominated the battle. The only standout was a unit of mercenary orcs that refused to stop fighting and charged headlong into the heavy horsemen of the opposing side. In the end, facing death, the last three orcs offered their services to attackers.

I feel Chainmail does a good job at emphasizing the importance of ranged attacks. Maybe better than the later d20 based D&D combat systems.

@calutron you get used to it, usually in the spring, when we first come up, we're always impressed, but the more time we spend up here, we kind of forget and it becomes just the background. The brain tend to normalize experience, at least for us. But I still have enough of awe to look at it today, and be think, wow, I need to take a picture of this.
Most browsers allow you to configure the default search engine some way. Sometimes it can be tricky. But once you figure it out, you can add more.

Gibt's jemand der "Retro" Midgard spielt da draußen? Ich versuche mich zwischen M2 und M3 zu entscheiden. Ich glaube M3 hat ein oder zwei Klassen mehr und die Regeln sind ein wenig einfacher als M2? Und M3 hat wohl eine andere Weltbeschreibung. Aber sonst ist beides mehr oder weniger "Midgard wie es sein sollte" für Retro Kram? Stimmt das so ungefähr?

Boot Hill: had a training game with the first scenario from the book today on Roll20. (The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral).
The game is as deadly as it is said, and even if you are a stat monster a protracted fight can get you killed, as Wyatt Earp found out in this game (headshot).
In the end the last lawman (Virgil Earp) managed to reach safety on the last point of strength he had, while the remaining three of the Cochise County Cowboys were chasing after him.

Boot Hill is one of those really early TTRPGs that don't yet know how TTRPGs work, but which really want to embrace the hobby. It's basically nothing but a gunfight simulator, with just enough campaign rules to be able to be called a roleplaying game.
(we played the revised 2nd edition)
It's one of those games that make people try everything EXCEPT combat because combat is definitely a fail state.

anyway, 2e Boot Hill has 6 stats: Speed, Gun Accuracy, Throwing Accuracy, Strength, Bravery, and Experience.
These stats have modifiers that are used for first shot comparisons, and accuracy.
Strength also is used as hit points.
Experience is measured ONLY by the number of gunfights the character was in.

the main combat play loop is like this:
1. movement phase: everybody can move according to their capabilities. The characters with a higher result on a d100 go last (i.e. they can plan better what to do when everybody else has moved)
2. first shot: the speed of every combatant is calculated (multiple shots are possible at lower values) and then worked through
3. shots are resolved as to accuracy (as in: do they actually hit?)

it feels like a very elegant, if intentionally limited system.
there are no classes. there are no skills (well, there is one: gambling, but that's a special case). There are in fact not even stats for any animals and only a few stock NPCs. Oh, and a list of the fastest guns that ever lived, which is like cutting down the DnD monster manual to townsfolk and the demon lords.

@kyonshi That's actually a good idea, basically how my RuneQuest (not Glorantha) games go. There's a few monsters as "don't go here" warnings, but almost anything you really have to fight are other PC-types, and a single hit can kill you.
Makes you reevaluate your aggression levels, for sure.
@kyonshi BH is definitely "Western gunfight wargame" first and "Western tabletop RPG" a distant second. But here's the thing -- D&D's foundational history involves people roleplaying the hell out of their wargames rules without the RP being codified, so I think Boot Hill reflects a lot of that. I think it was intended to just provide wargame combat rules and the RP was just assumed to be happening by fiat.
As I recall, however, the third edition went a lot farther in providing what we would consider a "full TTRPG" experience?

@fribbledom I think the recent RAM shortage will delay the shift from 16GB to 32GB as the new most common memory capacity of a personal computer for a few more years.
@fribbledom the average phone has 4-6 GB of Ram.
