I was looking into dragon origin stories and came across this fascinating story of the dragon of Norton Fitzwarren.

The town has a dragon symbol on its welcome sign. (Image 1)

        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_F

When the Romans were expanding into Britain (around 40 AD), there was a massacre of Britons by the Roman General Ostorius.

        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publius_

Someone made a statue of Ostorius in the late 1800s (Image 2)

Ostorius put down uprising after uprising. The legend goes that the bones were left piled up in Norton Camp and from these a dragon grew. Over the centuries it grew larger and larger.

In medieval times, one of the Fitzwarren family defeated the dragon and went on to other adventures in Europe.

Ship of fools from the cover of a 1930 German art magazine.

Painting of a one-masted ship, main sail not correctly anchored, flag at the top of the mast looking a bit like a scythe. Ship is in the clouds, moon in the background. Within it, several fools are gallivanting about, including three "flappers" wearing domino masks and clown hats, and nothing else (tastefully censored by me). Also two fools with ruffs and a slightly medieval y dressed person holding a champagne bottle, facing the moon.

            😀
            Das wird also sicherlich schön.

This time I will referee only one game: - a Hexcrawl set in late 18th century colonial North America. Looking forward to be a player in several of the other games featured at LoFiCon 26. There is such a broad range: classics, modern hacks….

I think I’ll run this fort until 550 (24 more years) or collapse. Then I’ll export the map and turn it into the final mega dungeon for my campaign. Hundreds of years later and taken over by evil. Should be an interesting map.

Why is this huge cavern full of carvings and statues? The miner’s guild demanded a guildhall, and I wanted all the green stones for the roof of my farm. 🤣

In 2004, gamespy did an interview with Dave Arneson. D&D was born to counter rules lawyers.

GameSpy: How did you come up with the idea of getting off the surface and going through a dungeon crawl?

Arneson: Well, dungeon crawls were, I think, the easiest things to set up because all you had to do was draw a grid map and didn't have to worry about the great outdoors and setting up trees and stuff. People also couldn't go wandering off where you didn't have a map because it was solid rock.

GameSpy: Why fantasy, though? You had started out playing with real-world armies.

Arneson: Some other people in my group set up rules for modern games, or even back in the age of Napoleon. We would get in these arguments, though, about historical accuracy, the latest translation of the latest book, and what was "real." Going into a fantasy world was actually again kind of a copout from my point of view. I didn't want people always coming up with some new book saying we just had to use because it was right and the old one was wrong. This was a fantasy world, so who could come up with anything to prove that he was lying or that a monster wasn't accurately represented? [Laughs]. Now, of course, there's book on everything. It's trickier than it was in the beginning when there weren't as many (fantasy) books.

The Borg system is solid, and the introductory starter set adventure "Trapped in the Tropics" is quite good. Drops the players right in the action, gives a clear goal (escape) without being railroady. Lots of places and people to interact with.

In Dragon #7, June of 1977, Gary Gygax wrote an article about the origins of D&D.

the medieval rules, CHAINMAIL (Gygax and Perren) were publshed in Domesday Book

I revised and expanded the rules for 1:20 and added 1:1 scale games, jousting, and fantasy. Rob Kuntz and I had acquried a large number of 40mm figures, and many of them were so heroic looking that is seemed a good idea to play some games which would reflect the action of the great swords and sorcery yarns.

When the whole appeared as CHAINMAIL, Dave began using the fantasy rules for his campaign, and he reported a number of these actions to the C&C Society by way of articles.

I thought that this usage was quite interesting, and a few months later when Dave came down to visit me we played a game of his amended CHAINMAIL fantasy campaign. Dave had taken the man-to-man and fantasy rules and modified them for his campaign. Players began as Heroes or Wizards. With sufficient success they could become Superheroes. In a similar fashion, Wizards could become more powerful. Additionally, he had added equipment for players to purchase and expanded the characters descriptions considerably -- even adding several new monsters to the the rather short CHAINMAIL line-up.

I find there is just something disingenuous about the phrasing to me.

Idea is to play through U1 (The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh) before switching to „westmarshy“ mode of play where the players can interact with adventure sites around the town of Saltmarsh which will serve as a base. Still looking for small dungeons/adventure locations to populate the surroundings of the town. Suggestions = welcome!

They decided to forego the underground, and instead decided to check out a ruined city the group had found in the southeast. On the way there they saw a dragon passing over them, and hid in a forest that turned out to be full of red-hatted gnomes that hate dwarves.
