Aus dem Grenzland Zine Nr. 5 "Science Fantasy", wo ich einen Vorschlag für Schusswaffen in Rollenspielen mit D&D-artiger Lebensenergie und Rettungswürfen gemacht habe.

This is the typeface used in the classic Swedish 1980s #ttrpg magazine Sinkadus!
@mrundkvist I guess @lkh can tell us more about the zine and the fonts used. I thought it was Souvenir, the classic typeface of the D&D B/X books?

FACEBOOK IS TOXIC. META IS AWFUL.
WHY CONTINUE FEEDING IT? 💎
Nearly everyone complains about Facebook and Meta.
The algorithms are toxic.
The advertising is invasive.
The outrage is manufactured.
CHILDREN ARE BEING HARMED.
Privacy is disappearing.
And then millions of people open Facebook or Instagram.
Again.
And again.
I genuinely do not understand it.
If you believe these companies are damaging children, manipulating attention, and making billions from human vulnerability, why are you still giving them your presence?
Especially the parents.
If Facebook and Instagram are unhealthy for your children, what exactly are you modeling by remaining there yourself?
“We know this place is harmful, darling, but Mummy and Daddy have photographs to look at.”
I left Meta years ago.
I didn’t die.
My friends did not evaporate.
Civilization continued.
There is email.
There are phones.
THERE IS THE OPEN WEB.
There is even the terrifying possibility of seeing another human being, god forbid, in person.
Meta survives because people who complain about it continue supplying exactly what it needs:
Their attention.
Their relationships.
Their outrage.
THEIR CHILDREN.
You do not have to wait for Zuckerberg to become a better person.
You can simply leave today.
The door swings both ways.

@Robinzz3 a post on this needed path https://hamishcampbell.com/the-omn-and-the-fight-against-the-dotcons/
Thanks Hamish. I’ve read it.
I think “leaving matters, but leaving is not enough” is exactly where this conversation has taken me.
The replies have made me much more aware of how deeply Facebook has become infrastructure for councils, businesses, community groups, families and local information.
That makes the open web problem much bigger and much more interesting than simply telling people to delete Facebook.
It's a cultural clash more than a technology problem - but technology still has an important role. We need to support, fund and use a wide range of #openweb technologies. There is no single "right path".
The sellouts have a role, the fundamentalists, the pragmatists, experimenters and weirdos have a role too. The value isn't in choosing one tribe and defeating the others.
It's in finding a balance where difference coexists, challenge and grow wider commons.
Yes, I think that’s right. I’m not looking for one correct tribe either.
What I want is a technological culture broad enough to allow very different people to use it in very different ways, without forcing everyone into the same commercial or ideological mould.
The open web should be messy, plural, experimental, and accessible.
My only hard line is that “difference” shouldn’t become an excuse for systems that are deliberately extractive, manipulative, or hostile to the people using them.
Apart from that, bring on the pragmatists, fundamentalists, experimenters, and weirdos. Especially the weirdos.

I really like glasses that have very thin frames, possibly even with no frames at the bottoms of the lenses, and that are made of very light materials. And I think we should really push that fashion, encouraging the kind of glasses that have no room for cameras and microphones in them.
Working on the presumption that the barely-working keyboard I pulled from the Inspiron 2650 was subjected to a spill of some sort a decade and a half ago, it'll be getting a spin in the dishwasher.
The €1 replacement works perfectly, so this is a low-stakes test to see firsthand if dishwashering is a viable way to clean filthy keyboards.

One year update.
Malaika is nearing completion, or as near complete as a wooden boat ever gets (I'm told) 🤷
There seems to be a never ending stream of things needing done.
We smelted our own lead for ballast and I'm now scrabbling around trying to do all those last minute tasks. which seem small but are all important in their own way I suppose.
Today I added a fire extinguisher, an LED flare and mounted a boat hook on the bulkhead wall.
Still some painting to do.
Launch date must be soon!

Having to contend with the internal conflict over technically being a Brand Account right now.
Anyway, install NetBSD. We don't get anything if you do, but it'll be good for you. You know that Raspberry Pi you bought in 2020 and has been sitting in a drawer ever since? How about that old laptop that's seen better days?
@netbsd How about I install it on my laptop or workstation to avoid sloppy Linux? Will you then stop shitposting me?
@thomholwerda Thom, listen. If you saw a delicious fountain of chocolate fondue, or some freshly-picked organic berries (or whatever your jam is) lying on a table with a handwritten note saying "Free, please take ❤️ ", what would you do?
The table is ActivityPub and the snack is the ability to roast OSNews.

The new ANTIFA anthem just dropped from Germany. Goosebumps. This song was banned on German national TV to not offend the rightwing AFD party btw.
Boot Hill: had a training game with the first scenario from the book today on Roll20. (The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral).
The game is as deadly as it is said, and even if you are a stat monster a protracted fight can get you killed, as Wyatt Earp found out in this game (headshot).
In the end the last lawman (Virgil Earp) managed to reach safety on the last point of strength he had, while the remaining three of the Cochise County Cowboys were chasing after him.
Boot Hill is one of those really early TTRPGs that don't yet know how TTRPGs work, but which really want to embrace the hobby. It's basically nothing but a gunfight simulator, with just enough campaign rules to be able to be called a roleplaying game.
(we played the revised 2nd edition)
It's one of those games that make people try everything EXCEPT combat because combat is definitely a fail state.
according to my calculations there is a 19% chance that any given hit is a mortal wound, and even non-mortal wounds might get you closer to death.
anyway, 2e Boot Hill has 6 stats: Speed, Gun Accuracy, Throwing Accuracy, Strength, Bravery, and Experience.
These stats have modifiers that are used for first shot comparisons, and accuracy.
Strength also is used as hit points.
Experience is measured ONLY by the number of gunfights the character was in.
the main combat play loop is like this:
1. movement phase: everybody can move according to their capabilities. The characters with a higher result on a d100 go last (i.e. they can plan better what to do when everybody else has moved)
2. first shot: the speed of every combatant is calculated (multiple shots are possible at lower values) and then worked through
3. shots are resolved as to accuracy (as in: do they actually hit?)
it feels like a very elegant, if intentionally limited system.
there are no classes. there are no skills (well, there is one: gambling, but that's a special case). There are in fact not even stats for any animals and only a few stock NPCs. Oh, and a list of the fastest guns that ever lived, which is like cutting down the DnD monster manual to townsfolk and the demon lords.
@kyonshi That's actually a good idea, basically how my RuneQuest (not Glorantha) games go. There's a few monsters as "don't go here" warnings, but almost anything you really have to fight are other PC-types, and a single hit can kill you.
Makes you reevaluate your aggression levels, for sure.
@kyonshi BH is definitely "Western gunfight wargame" first and "Western tabletop RPG" a distant second. But here's the thing -- D&D's foundational history involves people roleplaying the hell out of their wargames rules without the RP being codified, so I think Boot Hill reflects a lot of that. I think it was intended to just provide wargame combat rules and the RP was just assumed to be happening by fiat.
As I recall, however, the third edition went a lot farther in providing what we would consider a "full TTRPG" experience?
Game turns are rather loosely defined:
"weekly, monthly or of any specified duration."And here's your ancient school rpg in a nutshell:
"Each turn, the players relate to the referee what their character's actions and undertakings will be, and the referee moderates the resultant occurances"CC: @kyonshi@dice.camp
Wandering DMs had an interesting show with special guest Rutskarn, talking about Boot Hill. The deadliness of combat comes up a few times.
Spent my childhood optimizing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to fit everything into 640 KB.
Now one browser tab needs 2 GB of RAM so 17 analytics companies can find out I looked at socks.
@fribbledom 640 KB? Luxury!
When I were a lad, I used to have to write x=10 rather than x = 10 so that I could fit everything into 16 KB.
I've written about programming languages, compilers, open source, distributed systems...
The Fediverse's response:
"Tell us more about CONFIG.SYS and sock surveillance!"
Love it! 🤣
The funniest thing about that post is that nobody even questioned the 2 GB browser tab.
Somewhere along the way we all just accepted that as perfectly normal.
@fribbledom I think it's on the edge of what's acceptable. If you had said 4GiB that'd begin to be hard to believe
Give it two more years 🙈
@fribbledom I think the recent RAM shortage will delay the shift from 16GB to 32GB as the new most common memory capacity of a personal computer for a few more years.
@fribbledom the average phone has 4-6 GB of Ram.
2 GB for the one single application most people use on their PCs is not concerning to them.
This is beautiful. Comfortably Numb reimagined as a song of hope for Gaza, in Arabic and English.

@lkh @kensanata yeah but I kinda moved backwards. I wasn't using irc quite that much when I was younger.
but it's kind of the lo-fi chat I dig nowadays
Some of my formerly ... English-challenged? ... colleagues have become surprisingly ... eloquent? ... recently. At least when chatting in Slack. Gee, I wonder who I am talking to. 😬 🤖 😬 🤖 👀 😬 🤖 #noAI
I am also seeing a similar development among my formerly ... programming-challenged? ... colleagues? And everybody around me seems to be using fancy characters all of a sudden! Things like "→" are especially popular, both in Slack chats and in code. 🤷 😬 🤖 😰 🤖 I think I am surrounded!! #noAI
We're wittnessing the industrialisation of thought ...
What will be left? direct, immediate human encounters ... unamplified, unrecorded talking, singing and music ... witnessing live performative art ... grow your own crop ... build your own stuff.

How to escape time: music.

@kensanata actually like this a lot. Takes the homework aspect out of the game (= good for spontaneous games e.g. at open tables) and introduces a layer of necessary PC-NPC interaction which increases social embeddedness of MUs - this does something interesting with the setting! Trade-off is an decrease of tactical flexibility on the player‘s side. Was this the point of complaint?
How about moving the issue inside of the game world? Would there be an in character price to pay to magically gain the capacity to memorize multiple spells? Would said characer be willing to pay this price? (probably somewhere on the order of selling one's soul)
CC: @kensanata@tabletop.social
Well, warsaw airport has all these gigantic ads for a new Samsung phone plastered all over the place which helpfully remind me that it's not what I would want if I want an AI-free phone.
So... I assume the #Fairphone doesn't have AI automatically?
@SDF@social.sdf.org @SDF@social.sdfeu.org Any idea why SDFeu's gopher server has been down since (according to a bboard post) at least the end of March?
CC: @SDF@social.sdf.org @SDF@social.sdfeu.org
@lkh @SDF@social.sdfeu.org Interesting. The gopher server had been restarted a few days or hours after that post of mine, but I didn't get the time to comment here on that. But indeed now at least some services are unreachable again, including IMAP, as I'm getting a connection error rather than the expired certificate error.
Was there some issue with social.sdf.org, seeing that your mention of @SDF@social.sdf.org does not show up as a link, even though I can load social.sdf.org right now? (that said, issues with social.sdf.org aren't exactly rare, perhaps a bigger issue here is mastodon just not handling these issues better and not handling it as a mention even when (I presume) the remote server is not reachable)
@lkh @SDF@social.sdfeu.org @SDF@social.sdf.org Seems to be back now - or at least IMAP and gopher are working. Also, it seems the IMAP certificate has been updated.
