We had a few folks in the group who didn't have mini dice towers. I've fixed that for them by combining three different models and a little industrial glue. Bonus, it uses up some of my least used filaments.

I think static initiative is an interesting idea for and .

    1. All monsters have the same static initiative, annouced by the DM.
    2. Players roll initiative and note if they're "faster" or "slower" than the monsters.

Each turn, the fast players go first, then the monsters, then the slow players.

You won't have to keep track of initiative order for every single monster and player.

Optionally, players can re-roll initiative before each round to keep it more dynamic.

Ten years ago, I hobbled together my take on FASERIP by taking the public domain 4CS game and changing it to use 1d20 and doing a makeover on the tables and rules. It now has 850+ downloads.

Even the art in the pdf is public domain from comic books that let their copyright expire.

Neither Applesauce nor Cooking With Applesauce includes explicit character-creation rules, but I DID write some. Here they are, as an outtake:

                  1. Make a character.
                  2. The GM will let you know if anything needs adjustment.

Applesauce pregens each include the hundred-word text of the game system, along with an example (or two) specific to the character.

For a while I struggled to find a good universal _format_ for the examples.

Then I remembered that I think symmetry is for dipshits. Mantra of mine for most of my life.

The question is how I FORGOT that basic pillar of my design philosophy, in that context, for over a year. 😂

Ah well. Chalk it up to being a numbskull. And a dipshit. 😬

It's fun seeing which early choices grow the larger footprints. 🤔

There are four main cultural "buckets" in , one of which is the native Naelish. One of my first firm understandings about the city is that there are no Naelish ghosts in town. Plenty of ghosts, but never Nael.

It was just a bit of melancholy for a specific NPC in the ghost community at first, but it's become a pillar of Naelish understanding.

I'm making a resetting Symbol of Exsanguination for my game.

I haven't decided on what action activates the trap.

A Symbol of Exsanguination has the same triggering condition options as a Symbol of Death, which is one or more of:

look at | read | touch | pass over | pass through a portal bearing
                            ...the rune

It can be multiple. I'm thinking "read," "touch," and "pass over" as the activators.

One of the things I love about praxis is how you can get different stories from the same set based on what roles are picked.

If someone plays the First Lieutenant but there’s no Captain, you get a story about someone stepping up to leadership during a crisis.

I do like it when player characters get more powerful and competent over time. But the power curve of and its derivatives is too steep for me - I like it when a campaign has room to breathe.

Thus, some of my favorite RPGs have a middle ground of slow but steady improvement - where the players can pick some minor improvements after each session or two which become impressive over time. and are some good examples of this style of play - the characters can become very powerful over the course of a long campaign without actually developing into the equivalent of superheroes.

What is your preference when it comes to the power curve in RPGs?

Some aspects of this transformation were bad, other aspects were good.

Among the things that worked better was the easy handling of discoverable terrain.

You had the complete ma, but revealed only what the players could see. One could easily have "hidden" points-of-interest that awaited their discovery on a second layer.

I have been looking into how I could preserve this discoverability when going onprem again.

For dungeons I was using "Dungeon Blocks" with self-printed blocks.

But for the maps of the region, I was still missing an option until I discovers Masters of the Realm.

This allows me to design a region at the PC and then create 3d-printed hey tiles to make it "physical".

As my printer (Bambulabs P2S) allows color changed per layer, I was able to reduce the "hand painting" of the tiles to a minimum.

Below you see images of the first map I used in an adventure today.

We also play an on-again off-again Planescape PBEM using Savage Worlds + drop into others.
