I've always felt that experience points should be an incentive for a mode of gameplay. So if my players want to use 5E (apologies for not knowing the nomenclature for the revision to 5E - 5.5E?) but want to play a game where skill/tool use is more important and fighting something to avoid, we rework experience rewards so that they get their XP for using cook's tools to make a kick-ass tong sui or whatever, or 'defeat' someone in a debate by making it more of a round by round thing like combat but with silly "Ace Attorney" objections and attacks and defenses to win.
It might lack fidelity, but it's close enough and the existing CR->XP system is hardly precise to begin with, imo. Plus, the improv nature is sometimes wildly hilarious to participate in as players come up with crazy 'difficult' moves that increase the DC to demonstrate superior skills with their cooking chopsticks or obscure legal research.
Maybe that mode of play isn't for everyone, admittedly, but I've felt less constrained by rulesets and find a broader application of familiar rules for players who haven't tried more than one or two systems and want to stick with a familiar race/class structure and their favorite combination.
