My plan was to avoid joining any more time-consuming game jams this summer.

Then this Vaults of Vaarn game jam was announced, and those plans went straight out the goddamn window.

Despite the fact I didn't get to playtest that exploration procedure on game night, the weekend was fruitful for MM2. I may have cracked that nuanced d20 resolution mechanic I've been chasing for a while.
From 'infinite advantage' to 'boons, banes, and bangs', it is now called 'extra stakes'. I'll have to do some solo testing before I commit it to paper and blog about it (possibly, if I have time when I'm on holidays).

                                    @ludovic It's a pernicious trick.

There's a "ha ha not really joking" bit in Knights of the Dinner Table from the '90s, where Gary Jackson® bumps up headers & fonts 30%, put in pages of errata, sells a new edition.

Better page layout tools made it easy to just sell a fatter book. It looks like better value, it's more visible on a bookstore shelf. Same thing happened in novel publishing.

I like my games <64 pages, complete. Swords & Wizardry is pushing it at 144 now.

@HeyeBodo I usually have Human, Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Beastfolk as the major species. Dwarfs are best, they're fundamental "ancient builder/crafting people". Elfs to me come out of Celtic fairy tales, Wood Elfs/Fauns are fun, Sidhe are terrifying. Goblins are crappy Dwarfs, but more approachable. Beastfolk replaced Orcs as barbarians, players rarely genocide fuzzy babies.

The whole point of these is to replace Human foreign cultures, which are hard to distinguish in game.

question: when it comes to the Fantasy genre, how do you feel about the classic EDO-combo (Elves-Dwarves-Orcs) - including minor variants à la „Actually, in my homebrew setting, dwarves are seaborne raiders…“?
Well established cultural touchstones that simply allow for an easy access to Fantasyland because everybody vaguely knows what „1 Elf“ is about post LOTR movies? Or are you super annoyed by all the tired tropes connected to EDOness?

                                                          **Macchiato Monsters 2 playtest report.**

I had spent Friday afternoon designing a one-roll exploration, encounter, and events (or 3E) procedure I was eager to test. I had drawn a map using a non regular polygon grid I wanted to try out. There wasn't enough time to key locations but that was fine: I was going to use *The Perilous Wilds* to discover them at the table. I always enjoy the process and plan to have something similar in MM2.

Here's how sideways it all went:

The party makes preparations for a five-day trip to the abbey of St Abbans. Not even half a day in, as they are approaching the Kryptwood, the 3E roll gives me a discovery. Afcouple d12 rolls later, TPW says it is a planar disturbance. The PCs are sailing down the river on their newly acquired boat so I say it's a whirlpool, making strange wailing noises and sucking in the surrounding mist. Everyone scrambles to escape, and everyone fails their check...

Fortunately I had a plan for TPKs and other accidents: *The Painted Wasteland*. An excellent book that of course I hadn't brought with me to the session. Well, friends, let me tell you one thing: running an adventure you haven't fully read from your phone is exhausting.

We had a great time though. The party made it to the Sorcerer's Market, swindled a merchant into exchanging some now worthless jewellery for ectodollars, and took rooms at the Pastel House. Next time, they can start looking for a way back home.

                                                          1/2

Some GMs are sticklers for the full rules, & good for them, most use the quick-kill tables when you run out of HP & don't worry about it much. I've played with Tucholka once or twice, & he was loosey-goosey with it.

The later Tri-Tac games like Beach Bunny Bimbos with Blasters are more like how it really gets run, right from the start. But it's nice to have the option to use all the charts.
