In tune with today's WanderingDMs video.

In D&D, do you use level titles? Yes, No, or add a comment.

Here is an example from 1E AD&D, magic-user.

1 Prestidigitator
2 Evoker
3 Conjurer
4 Theurgist
5 Thaumaturgist
6 Magician
7 Enchanter
8 Warlock
9 Sorcerer
10 Necromancer

How am I supposed to turn this into a dungeon for my RPG campaign?

Even Gary Gygax did not play D&D as written. Here are his house rules for OD&D he wrote about in 2007

      • STR > 14: +1 to hit and +1 to damage if a Fighter
      • INT > 14: +1 1st level m-u spell
      • WIS > 14: +1 1st level cleric spell
      • DEX > 14: +1 to AC, and +1 to move silently
      • CON > 14: +1 HP per HD (same as a Fighter class gets, +2 if a
      Fighter)
      • CHA > 14: +1 (positive) on reaction checks
      • HPs: Characters are only unconscious at 0 HPs. For each level a
character may have a minus HP total equal to the level, so a 1st level
PC is dead at -2, a 2nd level at -3, etc.
      • When taking damage allow -1 HP per character level

Glimmermark session 57: after three weeks of no delves, the troglodytes had brought in outside talent and created multiple traps and ambushes together with some kobold mercenaries. The PCs managed to get around some of them, but got trapped in a room with hungry giant crab spiders, and later were lured into a room by kobolds and ambushed by a troop of troglodytes. All of which turned out to go badly for the trogs.

Barely any xp and treasure, but I think the trogs might have enough.

          Another Eternal Question for D&D

What D&D initiative system do you use?

If you are not familiar with the phases options, it breaks down initiative into phases of Movement, Missile, Spells, Melee.

And as always, leave a comment if none of them apply.

          individual rolls:15
          each side rolls:5
          each side rolls with phases:2

Dark Sun barely fit in goofy-ass AD&D 2E, there was still *some* survival/resource management left in the game, but 3E, 4E, & now 5E adaptations have just gone full in on fantasy superheroes.

The writing for the original books is more like Gamma World 1E, or fantasy Twilight 2000. Powerful but very squishy characters try to survive day by day, maybe die leading a revolt somewhere.

System shock: Sometimes dead is better. Infinite revival sucks.

                                Uniting the Editions, Part 3
Legends and Lore
Monte Cook
ver the last couple of weeks, I've written about why we want to try to unify the editions, and how we're going to pull it off. Here are some more miscellaneous thoughts about the process that are worth discussing as well.

Stuff to Leave Behind

Although we don't currently see universal consensus on this, it seems likely that there are a handful of things from prior editions that we don't want to bring forward into a new iteration of D&D. Not everything about every version of the game was absolutely golden.

For example, it would be difficult to imagine that THAC0 would make a comeback. Armor Class values going down to represent them getting better. System shock rolls. Racial level limits. Gender-based ability score maximums. Lots of bonus types. And so on. But here's the thing: if I'm wrong about that, get involved in the open playtest when it starts and let us know. If you would like to see things like that be a part of the core rules set, or if you would use rules like that as optional modules, that's the kind of information we are looking for in order to make this a game you want to play.

Further, there's stuff that is kind of on the fence in this regard. What about a system that resembled the weapons versus armor table in 1st Edition? Could we make that work as a part of a simulationist rules module? Maybe. Racial class restrictions? Sure (but why?). Are these good ideas? Bad ideas?

It‘s not a game I would usually pick up and it was not on my radars (maybe I was put off by anthropomorphic ducks?), but so far I’m very impressed by the content of the boxed set and the info design of the rules. Game seems to offer a nice bridge between an osr style adventure game and a rules-lighter tradgame. Wonder how it holds up at the table? Anyone of you played the game? Tell me about it!

B&B is a little complex, but not too hard. SB is a typical FGU overly-complex game, I enjoyed reading it but wouldn't run it.

Demons must be the SPI pocket box mini-wargame? It's not even slightly an RPG, and has even less "Authentic Thaumaturgy" than D&D.

suddenly all our terrors take form as Greg tells us about a mysterious woman in a white gown. What is she? A vampire?
Greg rolls the dice. "She's a chaotic illusion. But she's not a vampire." While we speculate, she attacks like a madwoman.
We explode into counterattack, our dice throws telling us how much damage we're doing. We hit her four times, tearing off her arm. Urgrurl slashes her in the abdomen. Wyvark, thrilled to be fighting evil at last, spears her in the head. Greg describes the awesome sight. "She's staggering. It looks like a shimmer spell.
She is dissolving into thin air." Will she heal herself and return?
As dungeon master, only Greg knows that she is a succubus. that luscious demon of mythology who descends on men when they are asleep in lonely outposts and lures them to sexual intercourse. Greg will bring her back on some other run, perhaps in her male form as an incubus who impregnates women as they sleep.?
Contrary to what you might expect, you are not sitting around a campfire on the eve of a full moon, listening to some fascinating (or frightening) medieval tales and monster stories. Nor are you watching a double feature of The Night-stalker on television. No, you are not having nightmares, ei-ther, from reading too much medieval fantasy and occult literature or watching too many late night horror shows. What you would find yourself in the middle of is some of the fantasy action and adventure of two different sessions of Dungeons and Dragons® (D & D), a fantasy role-playing (FRP) game currently enjoyed by more than three million players.
Why the great interest today in such games as Dungeons and Dragons®, Tunnels and Trolls, Chivalry and Sorcery:
RuneQuest®, Arduin Grimoire, Swordbearers, and Demons?
There are several factors best understood as part of the effects of a revolution in the way we view the world that help to explain this.

The Bible tells of only one conclusion for man-resurrec tion. (Resurrection and reincarnation are incompatible with each other.) God made man as a psychosomatic unity (a physical and spiritual being). Man has not only a soul (and/ or spirit) but a body that is destined for resurrection one day.
Our resurrection is guaranteed by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and it will occur at the time of His return to this earth (Romans 8:23-24; 1 Corinthians 15;
1 John 3:2-3).
MORALITY
FRP games generally see an amoral universe at best. Good and evil seem to be presented as equal and opposite poles.
In these games, both the characters and the gods are required or expected to align themselves with one pole or the other. Good and evil can be complementary or in conflict with each other. Because these games are open-ended, there is no final victory for good or evil.
Such activities as rape, stealing, murder, mutilation, human sacrifices, and so forth are incorporated into the adventure of the games. The situation itself and the characters involved determine what should or should not be done (as well as what is right or wrong).
The Bible posits a moral universe. God not only is the source of the physical world (as we have already noted) but the moral world as well.
Morality is grounded in God's goodness. Thus there is an absolute standard by which all moral judgments can be mea-sured. God has revealed this standard to us in the various

One of those "forever discussion" rpg discussion topics is should there be a unified experience point table or individual tables customized to different classes.

And then you could dovetail into what should the progression rate be.

@juergen_hubert i think the folks would love something like this. There is already good examples for thoroughly researched folklore-inspired adventures/settings: Beyond the Pale (Yochai Gal), Where the Wheat Grows Tall (10d10 Toads) to mention only two. We love these things 😍 OSR games and folk tales are a good match IMO since they lean more into problem solving and less into strings of combat encounters and killing things (5e, Pathfinder)

The Wandering DMs talk about D&D invisibility spell and items. And how tricky the rules can be, and how, generally, the rules for invisibility have become more restrictive with each new edition.

In my little homebrew game, I change invisibility to just be more like a chameleon ability. It avoids some of the pitfalls discussed.

But, there is just one thing about all the BRP, Runequest games that bugs me. I am not saying it is wrong or bad, just bugs me. I do not like SIZE being in the same block as other attributes like Strength, Intelligence, etc...

In concept, I like the idea that there are categories of sizes, and things change when you are in those other size ranges, but having it be a STAT that ranges from 1 to 100 does not appeal to me. Feels too fiddly. And I would probably rule that all characters are about the same size range anyways.

                                                                    web.archive.org/web/2017010115

For example, for GAZ10 Orcs of Thar, there are no thieves. It is race as a class, so you play Goblins, Trolls.

So if you play GAZ10, there are Find Traps, Hear Noise, Hide in Shadow skills. But those skills are forbidden if you play any other Gazeteer because you do not want to infringe on the Thief class.

                                                                      randomwizard »

It has been a lot of fun, but I have to say, players... well, the players in this game I have been running...

They really do have a problem with "clinging" too hard to what is written down on the character sheet. If you have a skill like tumbling, then that is what they will reach for.

I know some will say, just do away with a skill list and let the player use their brains. But, I do want a system where a player can get better at particular things, not just some broad (overly broad) system where you just can do thiefy things and you get better at thiefy things. Which leads to having to write it down, which leads to players getting to hung up on that is all they can do instead of using their brains.

Today after a long discussion on the NSR discord we came to the conclusion that there are indeed two different THAC0s.

AD&D 1e people used THAC0 as an informal shorthand for the attack matrix chart, but you had to remember the six repeated 20s for particularly low ACs. But it is not defined in the AD&D rules.

AD&D 2e officially adds THAC0 to the rules, eliminating the repeating 20s, but says a nat 20 always hits.
