Speaking of skills. Many years ago, I attempted to write out every skill from every Gazetteer for the BECMI Basic D&D line.

        web.archive.org/web/2017010115

This was a skill system that was bolted on to Basic. I like reading through them, because it shows a lot of the problems they encountered in designing a game with classes and adding skills later.

For example, for GAZ10 Orcs of Thar, there are no thieves. It is race as a class, so you play Goblins, Trolls.

So if you play GAZ10, there are Find Traps, Hear Noise, Hide in Shadow skills. But those skills are forbidden if you play any other Gazeteer because you do not want to infringe on the Thief class.

I have been working on the character sheet for my 1d100 game that evolved out of AD&D and then throwing some skills in it.

It has been a lot of fun, but I have to say, players... well, the players in this game I have been running...

They really do have a problem with "clinging" too hard to what is written down on the character sheet. If you have a skill like tumbling, then that is what they will reach for.

I do not have a solution. It is one of those eternal questions that should be on a wiki page.

I know some will say, just do away with a skill list and let the player use their brains. But, I do want a system where a player can get better at particular things, not just some broad (overly broad) system where you just can do thiefy things and you get better at thiefy things. Which leads to having to write it down, which leads to players getting to hung up on that is all they can do instead of using their brains.

Inspiration für Dismal Keep bezog Malthouse nach eigenen Angaben von The Black Sword Hack, Mork Borg, BX D&D, Warhammer, Cairn, Into the Odd, Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Survived the all-day game till just about 9pm, when everyone was getting tired and crunchy. Roughly 10.5 hours of gaming - that's about 3 to 4 weekly sessions in one day!

A 3rd level PC died from giant snake poisonous bite, 2 PCs leveled up, a lot of treasure found and more mysteries of the Black Maw uncovered.

And a sighting of a black dragon in the sky!

                It was a good game.

Today after a long discussion on the NSR discord we came to the conclusion that there are indeed two different THAC0s.

AD&D 1e people used THAC0 as an informal shorthand for the attack matrix chart, but you had to remember the six repeated 20s for particularly low ACs. But it is not defined in the AD&D rules.

AD&D 2e officially adds THAC0 to the rules, eliminating the repeating 20s, but says a nat 20 always hits.

I enjoy watching Wandering DMs because Paul & Dan are quite different in their referee styles.

The latest episode goes into their last weekend game, where Dan ran The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth.

I watched some of the weekend game live. Their recap goes into a great topic although it is not named. The episode is just a review of their game of The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, but the side topic (maybe the real topic) is... player expectations? the logic or lack of logic of dungeons? and it dovetails into game style preference.

In short, it is one of the topics that is ripe for people arguing on the internet!

                    youtube.com/watch?v=5r73CrI7pow

I certainly lean more into the camp of getting the player's involved about what kind of game is expected.

I am also not a fan of killer dungeons, nor much of a fan of many of Gygax's dungeons. Too many "trick the players" sort of set ups. But that is just my preference. And I have been here before, on the internet, and I am sure the counter argument will surface that the dungeons are "not that hard", you just have to use your brain.

My old man grump for today is for people posting GM advice:

Ask yourself: does this apply in Pendragon? Paranoia? Call of Cthulhu? Blue Planet? TFOS? Mage? AFMBE? A Fudge campaign following a group of police rookies in Milwaukee in 1972?

Or is it only really applicable to DnD, DnD clones, and DnD variants?

Well, we've made our daylong OD&D game work for 3 hours so far. It's been ... riotously chaotic as normal for this campaign.

I even got to resurrect a Mass Effect scene! Drained orcs on spikes...

We're taking a quick lunch/bio break and restarting in 45 min.

A scene from the first Mass Effect video game on the very first mission on Eden Prime. Humans have been placed on spikes and turned in zombie-like husks - with glowing white/blue eyes and weird blue mechanical-organic effects on their body.

Recent articles about the Deathbringer crowdfunding campaign have really crystallized for me why I've found the whole thing kind of off-putting (as much as I've thought about it, I'm not a huge fan of the 5e D&D YouTube ecosystem in general). Ostensibly, it should appeal to me as a 50-year old, straight white male who played in the 80s, likes current old-school games, and is a fan of classic fantasy, S&S, and sci-fi. But this is 2026, not 1976.
