Glimmermark session 48: they pulled the connection card to get into the sewers of the Keep again, trudged around a bit there, then went exploring in the cave system underneath. They found one troglodyte (but didn't recognize it as such), destroyed an undead monstrosity, then got attacked by spiders while trying to squeeze through a narrow opening. They also encountered a few more insects and yellow mold, before leaving through a secret escape route someone had dug from the keep's prison

I was trying to think of what RPGs have I run as a referee the most in my life. In order from most to least. The top 2 are probably correct, but maybe not? For example, when 2nd edition came out, we did not really just play 2nd edition. We just kept on playing whatever. Kind of a hybrid Basic D&D, AD&D, now we got thse 2nd edition AD&D rules that just seem like a streamlined version of 1st edition AD&D. It gets blurred.
1. Red Box D&D
2. 1st Edition AD&D / 2nd?
3. 4th Edition D&D
4. Star Frontiers
5. 3rd Edition AD&D
6. Starfinder
7. Gamma World 1983 edition
8. Marvel Super Heroes TSR
9. Top Secret 1980 edition
10. GURPS
Then it gets into so many 1 off, let us try this game and see how it goes that it is very difficult to judge.
EDIT to add some one off games
Gamma World 1992 edition
FASA Doctor Who
FASA Star Trek
Top Secret SI
Star Wars d20
MERP 80s edition
Paranoia 80s edition
Alternity (kind of a hacked up version)

Our playtest for Feast of Marrow and Spirits and Wolds of Old Salem went well. The PDFs will be done within a week of the project closing. Print on Demand copies will take a bit longer.
Even if you only play 5 of the 75 games in the project you’ll more than get your money’s worth.

I'm the world's worst TTRPG consumer. I have OD&D and AD&D/1e (all books), Classic Traveller 77, Swords & Wizardry 2nd print, OSRIC/Black Blade 1st print, Mechwarrior 1e, various modules and a whole bunch of PDFs from various places.
And that's mostly it. The last thing I bought recently published was "Into the Borderlands".
I'm a user, not a collector. Once I get the version that works for me, I'm content. Don't want/need others.
I think I'm the weird one at this table...
OK, it's morally dubious to give money to Hasbro, even for decades-old products, AND we have newer retro-clones of these, BUT:
B/X are now in print-on-demand. New copies of the second-best edition of D&D (Holmes Basic is better, but WotC won't even sell the PDF! Because they know it'd destroy all D&D 5.5E sales.)

Lewis Pulsipher wrote a series of game philosophy articles for D&D. He wrote the following in White Dwarf #3, published October 1977.
The referee must think of himself as a friendly computer with discretion. Referee interference in the game must be reduced as much as possible, because the referee is neither infallible nor completely impartial. Effectively, this means that the referee should not make up anything important after an adventure has begun. He should only operate monsters encountered according to logic and, where necessary, dice rolls. The type of monsters, numbers (through a formula depending on the size and strength of the party), treasure and so on should be determined by the referee before the adventure starts, so that he won't be tempted to change or add things in mid-game. Occasionally an adventure will be dull, because, players take the wrong turns or check the wrong rooms, while others may be 'milk runs' because players are lucky. Referees must resist the temptation to manipulate the players by changing the situation. Every time the referee manipulates the game on the basis of his omniscience, he reduces the element of skill.

A tv show in England, South of Watford, had an episode about gamers in 1984. They went to talk with members of the Games Workshop. Once again, Albie Fiore is presented as the DM of the group. But, now that it is 1984, Albie has changed his look, with an 80s shirt and an 80s tie, and less bountiful curls.
There are some quite funny moments in this episode. Well worth watching
New post: What do past D&D players recall about the rules? What would they tell new players? https://troypress.com/dd-rules-according-to-past-players/ #TTRPG #DnD
The core mechanic that past D&D players focused on was rolling a d20 to hit a target number, but no one mentioned advantage or critical hits.
Only 31% of players could name even a single ability, and stats were seen more as predictors of your class. The classes recalled from a list focused on spellcasters, though little was remembered about spells except that they were class-specific and powerful.
People remembered combat took turns and dropping to 0 hp could result in death. #OSR #TTRPG
There are few sweeping generalisations that I am more confident about than this: If a #ttrpg adventure comes with a downloadable soundtrack then that music is 100% guaranteed to be complete arse.
Bryce Lynch taking down James Desborough's newest adventure is hilarious.
It’s the roaring 20’s. Life is changing on the British Isles, but the ageless creatures living there don’t appreciate the ruckus and are making their displeasure known in deadly ways.

I took a screenshot of Albie Fiore's setup behind the DM screen in the youtube video where he is running a game in 1980.

He is running a (pretty damn good) adventure he wrote that is in White Dwarf issue 18, called The Halls of Tizun Thane.
